(BELLY BAD), instead make it at home using fresh, natural and better ingredients (BELLY GOOD). The meal comparisons are too easy to make. The personal initiative it takes to make the change is just too hard for the average over-weight American.

Realistically, this book should be retitled to something like "Obvious Meal Planning for DUMMIES."

Here's another pretty basic thought from the author, Jorge: "Frozen meals often have a long list of preservatives with names you don't understand...they can also add excessive amounts of sodium." (p.134)

Well .... duuuuuuh. If you don't know that you have little hope in eating well and getting beyond the frozen food treadmill (pun).

I will give him some reps ..... saying he isn't reluctant to negatively mention Weight Watchers and many restaurants that pretend to be on your side, diet-wise. It often isn't the case with the food and the ingredients they serve. They "improve" the taste of their meals in many ways (which keeps you eating and coming back for more) that end up with more and more calories.

But, if you're the type of person who consistently buys packaged frozen meals, you're probably the type that doesn't exercise and probably the type that buys a new diet book each year like "The Belly Fat Cure." Good luck!

The Belly Fat Cure: Discover the New Carb Swap System and Lose 4 to 9 lbs. (April 6, 2010) – A new study demonstrates that eating protein-rich eggs for breakfast reduces hunger and decreases calorie consumption at lunch and throughout the day. The study, published in the February issue of Nutrition Research, found that men who consumed an egg-based breakfast ate significantly fewer calories when offered an unlimited lunch buffet compared to when they ate a carbohydrate-rich bagel breakfast of equal calories.(1) This study supports previous research which revealed that eating eggs for breakfast as part of a reduced-calorie diet helped overweight dieters lose 65 percent more weight and feel more energetic than dieters who ate a bagel breakfast of equal calories and volume.(2)

article

http://www.flickr.com/photos/kolleggerium/ / CC BY 2.0

Yeah! can help you with walking?

Sure can (this is not a joke).

In the Good Health section of the September 2009 on p. 51, GH cites a study from San Diego State University that reports on the optimum amount of steps (speed) we should walk when we are walking to exercise. (and who says a state school education is wasted??!!)

What's the answer according to SDSU? "The right pace? About 100 steps a minute, says lead researcher Simon J. Marshall, Ph.D."

And then, Good Housekeeping goes beyond that and suggests to fire up your iPod and optimize your pedometer for this new optimal walking strategy.

Now, we here at Diets Suck are all in favor of walking and exercise. However, to realistically think that this information will be used or applied by more than 1% of the population is unrealistic. Most people (who really need to walk) don't own an iPod, a pedometer or even walking shoes.

Our suggestion is this: people should first try walking around the block first (rather than optimize at 100 steps per minute). The people who don't try walking around the block, try DIETS instead. And those diets never work and that is why ..... diets suck.

The Fruitcake Diet

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

But, no, there is no such thing as a fruitcake diet.

Well, not exactly. The real fruitcake diet is this – you simply don’t eat the fruitcake! Not now. Not ever. That’s your diet for ya. It should be very easy to do.

The simple truth about eating fruitcake is this:

1- it doesn’t taste good

2- it is not that good for ya

3- the calories are not worth it

4- there are better things to eat

5- you don’t want to be known as a fruitcake (consumer)

A given 1.5 ounce slice of fruitcake looks like this nutritionally: 224 calories, 26 percent of calories from fat, 7 g fat, 3 g saturated fat, 39 mg cholesterol, 40 g carbohydrates. So not that bad, but not that good. Seriously. It will take a brisk 44-minute walk to burn it all off. And who is going to do that over the next couple of days with all that snow out there across the country??? The answer is – not you.

Also, a given fruitcake typically has no vitamin A or C. Again, about 224 calories of junk.

The only people that want you to eat the fruitcake is Aunt Gladys at 224 pounds herself, and maybe your mom. That’s it. Two people. You can easily persuade them that you are saving room for other items at the table.

So, again, this is not a fruitcake diet because we don’t believe in diets because Diets Suck. Right? But for a dieting list we were surprised that it was half decent. But we swear, that all these people do is reorder the list for the next time they need to come out with a list. However, the other good news is that this list is out before the National Eating Season, aka the winter time.

Our dieting advice to diet list readers is this. Just pick out one thing on the list and try to do that well for a month before taking on the whole darn list! It is just like dieting, which sucks by the way; the dieters want to loose 10 pounds before loosing the first pound!

Ok, back to the MSN 10-item list. Here are the first three with our comments:

1- eat protein!

We couldn't agree more. What is amazing is that the author points out the anemic (pun intended) "government recommendation" number for daily protein intake. It is embarrassingly low. (Were these people also in charge of the banking system?)

In any case, why not just drink some milk. Is that so hard? An 8 oz glass of 2% milk gives you 8 grams of protein. Didn't your mom always tell you to drink it? Was mom ever wrong?

2- don't skip breakfast

Isn't this on everybody's list? Yeah but it is still true.

Since it is getting colder, how about eating some oatmeal? Yum, oatmeal!!!

Quaker-Instant Oatmeal Variety Pack, 55ct

3- don't skip other meals

This is the standard eating on the run advice that everybody hears and knows and nobody pays attention to it Snack Food Nation.

So there is the list, at least the top 3. There is more, but let's focus on 1 or 2 first.

And just remember ... Diet's Suck!

FREE Fat (er, food) on 11/04/08

FREE Krispy Kreme Donut on 11/04/08

On Election Day, Nov. 4, 2008, participating Krispy Kreme stores will offer one free star-shaped doughnut with red, white and blue sprinkles to each customer wearing an "I Voted" sticker. While voters may not always agree on the best candidate, voters can agree on one thing: Celebrating one of America's most coveted constitutional rights can be oh-so sweet.

"We can't guarantee that your candidate of preference will win on November 4, but we can guarantee that your right to voice your choice will be rewarded with a patriotic doughnut that will remind you just how tasty freedom really is," said Krispy Kreme's Chef Ron Rupocinski. However, the recent study indicates that most people do not get enough zeaxanthin and lutein in their diets to prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD gradually and permanently destroys central vision, which is necessary for activities such as driving, reading or watching television. It is the leading cause of blindness in American adults over age 60.

It's is not about the diet, it's not about the diet, it's not about the diet!

Ok, class, altogether now ... They hope by adding the vegetable to a normal diet, it could help ward off conditions such as brittle bone disease and osteoporosis.

BBC News

Public release date: 14-Jan-2008

Contact: Kathleen Phillips
ka-phillips@tamu.edu
979-845-2872
Texas A&M University - Agricultural Communications

Texas A&M carrot may help prevent osteoporsis

COLLEGE STATION – A specially developed carrot has been produced to help people absorb more calcium.

Researchers at Texas A&M AgriLife’s Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center studied the calcium intake of humans who ate the carrot and found a two-fold increase in calcium absorption.

The research, which was done in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine, means adding this carrot to the diet can help prevent such diseases as osteoporosis.

###

The finding will be reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences online edition Jan. 14. Because, it seems, that everything extreme in this country hits the news eventually (among other reasons).

Here's a typical Operation Boot Camp testimonial in a recent article from CNN:

"Two years ago, Tim Lenczowski dreaded walking from the parking lot into his office."

And now?

"Eight months later he had lost a total of 120 pounds. To date, Lenczowski has run five full marathons and 12 half-marathons, accomplishments he would have thought impossible five years ago."

So ... why wouldn't this be a good thing? Old Tim got the results that he desired, didn't he?

Well, if you want to read some lame and uninspired reasons, consult this blog article: "7 Reasons to Not Try Operation Boot Camp." [we are unimpressed by this blog's thinking]

We here at the Diets Suck blog are strong advocates of exercise. However, we are mostly advocates of what works in a healthy and sustainable manner. To us its simple --- we are skeptics regarding the sustainability issue relative to Operation Boot Camp. We believe that a good workout is a great idea and what America needs. However, people who need to loose over 100 lbs. need first to have a serious and extreme conversation with their family doctor.

Delivery Diet Sales Are Booming. "We found that the majority of people regained all the weight, plus more. Sustained weight loss was found only in a small minority of participants, while complete weight regain was found in the majority. Diets do not lead to sustained weight loss or health benefits for the majority of people."

Mann and her co-authors analyzed 31 long term studies and concluded:

"What happens to people on diets in the long run?" Mann asked. "Would they have been better off to not go on a diet at all? We decided to dig up and analyze every study that followed people on diets for two to five years. We concluded most of them would have been better off not going on the diet at all. Their weight would be pretty much the same, and their bodies would not suffer the wear and tear from losing weight and gaining it all back."
